🔎 Trim Router Buyer’s Guide

Compact, palm, and trim routers are compact small devices that are handheld and also used in woodworking applications. They are simply smaller versions of normal routers which are mostly used to smoothing the edges of a project after veering operation. It is used mostly in workplaces where precision cutting is applicable. The main job of the trim router is to cut pieces of plastic laminate into smaller measured sizes.

Factors to Consider When Purchasing a Trim Router

Several factors are to be considered when you want to decide on the type of trim router you want to buy. These factors may include:

➡️ Depth Control

This feature helps its users adjust the depth of the tool. For any device you want to purchase, it is very important that each tool should have a decent range for depth to expand its applications. It is also advisable that you buy a trim router that allows you to adjust the cutting height from above the table using a manual or dial handle. Also known as “above the table adjustment”, this feature is responsible for stopping the process any time the depth needs to be changed.

➡️ Vacuum Port

This design allows the device to get rid of unwanted sawdust from your tabletop. This system of mechanism should be one of the features you ensure should be smooth and efficient since it handles the removal of unwanted sawdust particles.

➡️ Electronic Feedback Circuitry

This part of the trim router is designed for adjusting the torque by the motor based on the output of the device and the load it takes from its users. With this brilliant feature, the customers are freed from adjusting the speed of the tool while focusing more on the project. The rate at which work is done is determined by this feature.

➡️ Motor Speed and Controller

The speed of the motor is important when it comes to determining the trim router you want to buy. A normal controllable speed is required since most users lose control when it is too fast or put too much effort when it is too slow. Controllable motor speed is used in different uses at different bits. Cleaner cuts at very high speed are gotten with small bits while on the other hand, large buts are required for slower speed to avoid accidents.

➡️ Arbor Size

The collet size which is also known as the arbor size determines the minimum diameter of the bit which will be used for your project. Usually, collects are about ¼” in diameter and some routers can take up to ½” of the collet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a trim router used for?

A trim router has recently been a versatile tool that is used in most workshops. They can be used for various uses such as rounding over edges, flush trimming hardwood edging, routing for inlay hinge mortises and cavities, and a ton of more uses.

How to make trim molding with a router?

First off, prepare your stock for milling. Hardwood is best for trim molding and when molding with a router, make sure that the wood is completely free out of metal objects so you will not cause the machine to break down. Set up the wood stock and hold it firmly in place (some people try to drill a hole and hold it down with a table saw). Avoid running narrow pieces through the table saw. Use the router to insert the desired shape on wider practice boards first. When that is done, carefully adjust and test the height of the bit before milking. Keep that height till the end of the molding. To make the molding process faster, you have to put the desired profile on both sides of the board. Finally, run the piece through the table saw with the profiled edges against the fence. Repeat the sawing and routing until you get to the required amount you need.

What kind of router bit to trim laminate?

Trim routers or laminate routers have evolved and as their names suggest, they are specialized for a particular skill. Trim routers normally require smaller bits for laminate trim. Each trim router comes with a ¼-inch bit collet and they can’t use a larger blade diameter at all.

How to trim laminate countertop with a router?

First off, start by cleaning the countertop with whiskbroom then brush off the router’s base plate as well. Place a single layer of transparent tape on the surface which you want to laminate along the router’s path to prevent the base of the router from scratching the finished product. Insert your bits and adjust the depth of your router. Place the router base flat against the laminate surface. Hold the device tight against the edge of the cabinet and move it using the direction in which the bit travels to. Trim the entire edge with consistent cuts.

Conclusion

Selecting and purchasing the best trim router forgive a woodworking project solely depends on your preference, budget, or needs. You may end up getting the Dewalt, Makita, or Bosch models which have great features and wonderful designs.

Irrespective of your choice, always go for trim routers which can boast of speed, the safety feature, the type of base, the power of the motor, and warranty to make a more informed decision.

  1. You called the Makita RT0701CX7 the best that used a 1/2″ collet, but it uses a 1/4″ collet and it does not appear to be able to handle a 1/2″ collet. I bought one based on your suggestion, now I have to take it back, as I only have 1/2″ bits (a lot of them) and don’t want to buy more just to fit 1/4″. Did I miss something? Can this router handle a 1/2″ collet?
